MORE INFO

.: Brief Description :.

Although Rockweed or Ascophyllum nodosum belongs to the brown algae category and comes from the Fucaceae family,
it is a yellow-green alga which grows on rocks forming dense colonies. It has long smooth fronds and is characterized by its "floaters", which it uses to remain upright when the tide submerges it, in the manner of nymphs on the intertidal rocks However this alga had difficulty finding a taxonomic rank. Originally named "Fucus nodosum" (knott ed sea plant) in 1753 by the famous botanist Carl von Linné, it changed genus at the beginning of the 19th Century to become "Ascophylla", from the Greek "Askos" meaning "sac" (to describe the floaters) and "phyllon" meaning "leaf". Auguste-François Le Jolis, a specialist in
algae studies, gave it the name by which it is known today in 1864.
When it is not harvested, the number of floaters tells us how old it is. One floater indicates one year, and it is not uncommon for it
to live for over 25 years! Ultra-resistant, the fronds of this knotted alga have the ability to regenerate from their base over several centuries.
Its HIGH PHLOROTANNINS (Pavia H., 2000) AND FUCOIDANS CONCENTRATION also give it the common name of "Black wrack".
They qualify this alga as "Sea Oak", A SYMBOL OF LONGEVITY, and they minimize oxidative stress and therefore premature skin aging.
